important books... [on] the art & history of engraving 143) Although Chatto's contribution to this work is not acknowledged
on the title there are two prefaces, each signed by one or other of the authors, this lack of acknowledgement on the title
lead Chatto to issue of pamphlet in which he claimed to be the 'author of the first seven chapters of the work...'
This was the first major historical and practical treatise on wood-engraving and the technical aspects of the work remains
today as the most detailed technical description of the whole craft of nineteenth century engraving. As well as describing
the traditional processes in great detail, the text is sufficiently forward looking to discuss adapting traditional engraving
technique to take account of the rigours of early machine printing of wood-blocks. Early methods of metallic relief engraving,
such as the processes of Lizars, Hancock, Wone, and Collins are also touched on. £185.00
