Presumably a display of the papers produced in the area for distribution at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900, the samples show several types of papers including examples printed with letterpress, and a colour illustration while 3 of the samples - each a bifolium - on different coloured papers carry large watermarks that were clearly commemorative papers made and watermarked for the exhibition. A rare and unusual example of a French papermaker's craft. £195.00

London: Robert Horne, 1961. 8vo, (212x138mm), 648p, including 78 paper samples, each of four leaves, 131 illustrations, the outer margins of the last 6 samples (of mechanical wood papers) these slightly browned at the edges - as usual. A very good copy in original buckram, dustjacket designed by Ruari McLean. A production which was unique in its day and which remains as a monument to the range of book paper available to the contemporary British printer. The wide range of line and screened illustrations, by members of the Society of Industrial Artists (including Eric Fraser, Barbara Jones, Cecil Keeling & Kenneth Lindley), demonstrate the appearance of the images on the various papers. £40.00

Although the text of this proposed work is printed there is no title page or other supporting pre-lims with only a drop-title as noted above. The work only lists 1,374 titles from A to Frisch and so clearly the work was never completed, while only a few copies are likely to have been privately circulated. A tipped in ms note, signed in pencil by Bé van Ginneken, states: This is a catalogue Mr Voorn started to compile of his own collection (now at the Koninkÿke Bibliotheek/Royal Library, The Hague). Though he never finished it, and descriptions are all in Dutch, it may be of some use to you.' £45.00

A collection of 9 samples of Indian papers, 8 are bifoliums and one (a Nepalese paper) is tipped onto a leaf with supported letterpress. The examples were bought by the compiler from a paper merchant who provided them as a sample of the work of small scale unites located in forest areas using simple machinery. The papers originate from a wide are of the country from Tamil Nadu in the south to Assam on the border with Tibet, together with the Nepalese sample noted above which. although in close proximity to India, shows paper made by a quite different method. £65.00

18673 WATERMARK PORTRAIT - DARD HUNTER. A SHEET OF DARD HUNTER'S CHIAROSCURO LARGE PORTRAIT WATERMARKED PAPER. Paris: Perrigot-Masure, 1922-4. Single sheet, (218x294mm), of white mould-made wove paper carrying a large chiaroscuro (light and shade) watermark of Dard Hunter as a young man with his name in his Viennese lettering style. Fine. (Stone & Dugal, Dard Hunter watermarks 26) A splendid and rare example of Dard Hunter's paper with a truly wonderful portrait watermark. The mould was made by W. Green, Son and Waite in England, from a wax portrait modelled by Paul Couvez after a photograph by Clara Johnson. Hunter ordered seven reams from Perrigot-Masure in 1924, and a further nine reams in 1924. Used primarily for stationery, this Large Portrait watermark paper was also inserted as a specimen in Old papermaking, and for the prospectus of The literature of papermaking. £100.00


16608 WATERMARK - ROYAL LETTER PAPER. AN UNUSED BIFOLIUM OF LETTER PAPER CARRYING A WATERMARK FOR PRINCESS BEATRICE. [No place or papermaker, 1920s.] Single sheet, (180x226mm), folded in half vertically, and carrying a watermark of the name BEATRICE surmounted by a crown. Unused and in fine state. A number of English papermills produced such personalised letterpaper in the early part of the last century, this unusual survival being from sheets manufactured for Princess Beatrice (1857-1944) daughter of Queen Victoria. £25.00

20130 WIGGINS TEAPE (Papermakers). CAXTON ANNIVERSARY WATERMARK. Basingstoke: Wiggins Teape, 1976. A card envelope chemise containing 48 sheets (199x197mm) of specially watermarks Conqueror Vellum writing paper, together with 24 matching envelopes. The front cover carrying an electrotype reproduction of the watermark printed in silver gilt. Fine. Each sheet of the writing paper carries a special watermark, designed by Anthony Knowles of Plymouth College of Art, to celebrate the quincentenary of William Caxton's introduction of printing into England. The inner cover of the front cover carries a historic note and details of the anniversary watermark and concludes that 'other sizes of the paper can be supplied at a negotiable price, subject to minimum order requirements.' This, together with the 'imprint' being from the firm's mill sales division rather suggests that this particular form of distributing the sheets was issued as an advertisement sample rather than offered for commercial sale thus. £50.00
